By definition, ‘nanopositioning’ means moving a device or instrument to sub-micron levels of accuracy and holding it in place. Often a nanopositioning system will be designed to produce repeatable, high precision movement in increments of one nanometer or less, over a distance of a few microns.
Achieving movements with this level of precision relies on piezoelectric technology – where an electric field is used to make a quartz crystal expand or contract.
